Matthew 4

Jesus fasted 40 days and nights and then in his weakened state was tempted by the devil.  It wasn’t a net or a trap like the devil throws out for us and waits for us to fall into.  This seemed to be a one-on-one show down!  (LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLLLLLL’)  And what was Christ’ master defense strategy?  It is written…...”  He didn’t have to call down legions of Angels or use his God powers to give Satan a right upper cut, he quoted scripture.  You know what is awesome?  We can use this exact same strategy!!!  One of my favorite passages is Luke 6:45 “The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.” (NRSV)  If we fill our hearts with God’s word, his words will flow out from us like a bucket left under a running facet.

Jesus starts calling his Apostles in the last part of chapter 4.  It has always amazed me that these 4 fishermen just dropped what they were doing and followed Jesus.  They didn’t try to sell their equipment for a little traveling money; they dropped what they were doing and went.  Does Jesus expect the same from us?  If he came by my office at work and stuck his head in and said “Let’s go.”  Would I get up or would I say, “Let me finish this last sentence on this post.”

Have a great day,
Doug.
