Matthew 15

Matthew 15 starts off with verse 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands before they eat.”  3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?  8 ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; 9 in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.'” (NRSV)

“Teaching human precepts as doctrines” do you think this is still a problem today?  Try to drop a Sunday night service from a group that has been meeting twice each Sunday for several generations.  Is there anything wrong with meeting twice on Sundays?  Of course not, it is just a point to illustrate how today traditions can become taught as doctrines.  If you really want to see how traditions have become law, try to rearrange the “order of worship.”

A Canaanite woman comes to Jesus asking to remove a demon from her daughter.  He tells her that he has come for the Israelites and that it is not fair to feed the  children’s food to the dogs and she  being full of faith has a great answer,  “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” (NRSV)

The chapter ends with Jesus feeding 4,000 men, besides women and children.

Have a great day,
